Our Black, Gold, Marble and Chic Kitchen Makeover Reveal

Bliss at Home Kitchen Reveal

Our little kitchen…

It’s now the day to share our Black, Gold, Marble and Chic Kitchen Makeover Reveal!! This room has been on ye olde remodel list for sometime. This space is tricky since it is so narrow! Also, we had to find a way to work with the original footprint, since we knew this was not going to be our forever home. Their was no sense in spending the dough to do a complete gut and remodel. I sure wasn’t going to scrimp on style or utility though. This makeover was a good exercise in keep it or throw away…more on that later.

We wanted to have it high on style yet within our meager renovating budget. It also had to offer loads of new storage, better lighting, better surfaces, and work for our entertaining needs. My personal challenge was to find a way to blend my super glam feminine style with D’s love for industrial vintage decor. I think we did it and we have been enjoying our new space since Christmastime! Just call me Julia Child.

Are you ready to see it????

Well, no before and after would be complete without showing you what we had to work with.

Here’s the before…the state of the kitchen when we moved in…

It was definitely not our style. It also lacked storage and countertop space. The lighting was awful at night. It needed some major appliance upgrades, but everything worked except the dishwasher was not that great. The floor tiles were breaking left and right. I made do with it for a few years, but after some patience… I was ready for a more Kristin-friendly and family friendly space.

Here’s the results of our makeover:

Yes, this is definitely more Kristin-friendly! Zoey approves too. This is the view from our back door. This is a pleasant sight to come home to, that’s for sure!

Now let’s see it from the other side of the room…

So much better, right?! Obviously, a major change! The first thing to go was the floor. We installed new hardwoods that match the original in the rest of the house. As you can see we kept the same kitchen footprint, but here’s the difference. I shortened the countertop on the peninsula and added extra cabinets, countertop and open shelving where nothingness used to be next to the stove. Oh, and a wine cooler/beverage fridge because we just wanted to.

I extended the counter top front to back on the peninsula for more workspace and to add in counter stools. The boys absolutely love this and usually have their breakfast here.

I layered the lighting with new can lights, pendants, under cabinet lighting, and task lighting. We also kept the soffits and by trimming them out and tiling a backsplash around the room it makes them feel like they belong now.

Before we get into all the workspace details let’s take a look at the breakfast nook area we created.

We decided that a banquette would be a better fit for our family and allow us to have room for bar stools under the counter for extra seating.

The tulip table from Bellacor and my thrifted chairs work perfectly with the banquette. Such a cozy corner to enjoy. The pendant anchors the arrangement nicely. I kept this side of the room pretty simple and let the wall mouldings speak for themselves.

I’ll be sharing more details about the leather on the chairs very soon. Yes, it’s actually leather :)

The open shelving with my thrifted goodwill accordion lamps is hands down one of my favorite things about the new design– second only to the banquette area.

Now a look at our sink area. I absolutely love the gold hardware  and pendants with the white cabinets. It just shines so brilliantly.

We went with custom window shades from Loom Decor. I am completely smitten with this gold studded fabric! Next Monday, I will have a great giveaway for you and will be sharing my Loom Decor experience.

Gold stud custom shades!! Swoon

We all love how our kitchen turned out! It definitely has us all spending a lot more time in here. And about the keep it or throw it away. Since this was a budget remodel, let’s break it down…

The Kohler Double Sink–it is quality and still looks great.

The Cabinets–We decided to keep the cabinets because they are good quality and in good shade. Just painted, sealed, and added new hardware.

The Coat Rack–It is the first project we did here so it was sentimental and we use it everyday!

The Soffits–By adding moulding and trim detail, they look like they are meant to be there.

The Lighting–Goodbye ceiling fan!! Hello lots of new lights!

The Appliances–way past their prime.

The Countertops–1989 called and wanted its laminate faux wood cornered counter back!

The Flooring–was in really bad shape…like breaking in pieces every day bad shape.
